What makes “Unquestionably First” FBA’s longest standing peer group?
While the question could spark many answers, the real secret to their success lies in the powerful blend of trust, diverse perspectives, and consistent growth.
Launched in 2007 and moderated by Kim Fettig of Fettig Staffing, this group has evolved over nearly 20 years.
Today, the group exists of 5 dynamic members including Nick Adamy, Walter Perschbacher, Kyle McKeown, Matt Bakker (moderator) and Matt Hylant (joined in 2015). It was during a recent peer group visit, members shared with Mary Cline just how profoundly this group has shaped their personal growth and professional journey. The themes include:
Diverse Backgrounds Leads to Shared Growth: Each member entered with varied backgrounds in ownership, leadership, and family structure. That is still true today. This diversity naturally creates different perspectives and contributes to greater discussion. As members continue to advance through their personal and professional milestones, they bring a wealth of diverse insights and experiences that stimulate deeper conversations.
Trust Runs Deep: Conversation without Limits: One member shared that the group’s long-standing history has created such deep trust that there’s virtually nothing they can’t discuss openly. Some sessions may last just a couple of hours, but every third meeting or so, a pressing issue arises that can lead to extended, four-hour discussions.
Leading by Example: Commitment beyond Convenience: While the structure of meetings has become more relaxed over time, commitment remains strong. Matt, for instance, consistently traveled from Ann Arbor to attend meetings for several years.
Size doesn’t Matter: Quality over Quantity: Initially launched as a “super group” due to the large number of participants, the group was eventually divided into more manageable cohorts. And, while other participants naturally transitioned, the strength of the relationships, the value of their perspectives, and the collective collaboration drives their commitment to meet monthly. Over the years, the group’s ability to stay the course—through evolving businesses, changing life stages, and varying leadership challenges—has made it one of the most impactful experiences for all involved
